An excellent few weeks for Hyundai Motorsport customers competing in both TCR and rally series have delivered a string of victories and podiums at both the national and international level. Teams and drivers have made strong starts to their seasons in FIA WTCR and Slovenian Rally Championship, while cementing their roles as championship contenders elsewhere.
Elantra N TCR starts first WTCR season with a 1-2 finish
On the car’s competitive debut in the series Elantra N TCR drivers finished 1-2 in Race 2 of the season opening Race of Germany weekend at the Nürburgring Nordschleife (June 3-5). On his FIA WTCR debut as a Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing driver Jean-Karl Vernay made the best start from second on the grid to lead towards the first corner, with Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team teammate Luca Engstler moving up to second in the rush into Turn 1. The pair was comfortable at the head of the race to deliver a first 1-2 for both the car and the German-based team in the series.
In Race 1 it was the BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse pair of Norbert Michelisz and Gabriele Tarquini who took the best results of the Hyundai customers in fifth and sixth respectively. On their FIA WTCR debuts Swedish siblings Andreas and Jessica Bäckman performed well, despite their relative inexperience on the famous circuit. Andreas qualified 17th, before Jessica scored points from the weekend in 14th in Race 2.

Hyundai Motorsport TCR cars score 1-2 in class at Nürburgring 24 Hours
The pair of Hyundai Motorsport-entered TCR cars dominated their class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (June 3-6), finishing 1-2 in the fog-affected race. After qualifying first and second in class the Elantra N TCR and i30 N TCR held the lead of the class for all but around a 10-minute window of the running, often exchanging the top spot between themselves due to slightly different pitstop strategies.
After initially building an 11-minute lead over the opening six hours before a red flag erased most of the advantage, the two cars were able to pull away again once the race restarted with three-and-a-half hours remaining. Eventually the gap grew to nearly a lap as the Elantra N TCR of Marc Basseng, Manuel Lauck and Moritz Oestreich took victory in 32nd overall, ahead of the i30 N TCR driven by Luca Engstler, Hendrik Still and Jean-Karl Vernay – one place behind in both the class and overall rankings.

Pair of Elantra N TCR drivers takes Paul Ricard podiums
Sebastien Loeb Racing’s Felice Jelmini and Sami Taoufik both scored their first podiums with the Elantra N TCR during the TCR Europe weekend at Paul Ricard (May 28-30). All four of the team’s drivers enjoyed a strong qualifying at the French team’s home event as Mehdi Bennani led the quartet in second, with his teammates lining up immediately behind.
Jelmini got the best start of the four and challenged for the lead in the opening laps before consolidating second place for his first career podium in the European series. Niels Langeveld finished fourth – already the second time this season where he has narrowly missed out on a podium spot.
In Race 2 Toaufik rebounded from losing positions at the start. The Moroccan was tenth at the end of the opening lap, but methodically made his way forward – taking advantage of the strengths of the Elantra N TCR, as well as errors and problems for his would-be rivals. He moved into third with two laps remaining to score a first podium as a Hyundai customer. Bennani and Jelmini joined him in the top ten – sixth and seventh respectively.
Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Jáchym Galáš collected his first points in TCR Europe, for 12th in his Janík Motorsport i30 N TCR. The team – which is support by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech – enjoyed a consistent weekend as Galáš’ teammate Maťo Homola finished 11th in Race 1 before securing the squad’s first top-ten in the series with ninth in Race 2.

Target Competition teammates finish 1-2 in strong Misano weekend for i30 N TCR drivers
Reigning TCR Germany champion Antti Buri scored his first win of his TCR Italy season with Target Competition in Race 2 of the weekend at Misano (June 4-6). The Finn powered his i30 N TCR from sixth on the partially reversed grid to the lead inside of the first lap and was never headed from that point on. Behind, his teammate – Nicola Baldan – was making similar progress after starting seventh and managed to complete a 1-2 for the squad with a pass at the final corner of the race.
Behind the podium battle Kevin Ceccon brought his Aggressive Team-run i30 N TCR home fourth, with Igor Stefanovski eighth.
In Race 1 Buri, Baldan and Ceccon finished second, third and fourth respectively after K2 Engineering i30 N TCR driver was given a five-second penalty that dropped him from fourth to eighth.

Double podiums for Essex & Kent Motorsport teammates in TCR UK
Brothers Lewis and Bradley Kent enjoyed a very strong TCR UK weekend at Castle Combe (May 31), with both picking up a pair of podiums from the meeting. In Race 1 Lewis – the elder of the brothers – moved into the championship lead with second place, while Bradley joined him on the final podium in third.
Roles were reversed in Race 2. After the Essex & Kent Motorsport teammates made a strong start on their way to the front Bradley closed in on his sibling – the series’ 2020 champion – before taking the lead. The victory would mark the younger Kent’s first win in TCR competition in only his fourth start with the i30 N TCR. Holding on in second Lewis was able extend his championship lead after his chief early title rival – and fellow i30 N TCR driver – Max Hart was only able to take third place in Race 2 from a weekend where he qualified on pole position.

Hyundai España crew score impressive podium on gravel rally
Hyundai España-supported driver Iván Ares scored an impressive first podium of the Spanish Superchampionship season at Rally da Auga – Camina de Santiago (June 4-5) where he finished third overall. The result came on the gravel event, despite Ares joining the series as a tarmac specialist. Denktaş victorious in North Cyprus rally sprint event
North Cyprus i20 R5 customer Rauf Denktaş dominated this Sinde Ralli Sprint event (May 29). With co-driver Mehmet Mişon he was fastest on both of the runs through the stage. Four i20 R5 in action in British Rally Championship’s competitive return
Irishman Desi Henry topped one of the eight stages on the Neil Howard Stages (May 31) in his i20 R5 as the British Rally Championship returned to action after a hiatus of more than a year. Henry was one of four Hyundai customers on the event based at the Oulton Park circuit and finished in sixth overall to lead the group in the final standings in picking up. Josh Moffett narrowly missed out the top ten overall in eleventh, with James Wilson and Alan Carmichael 16th and 24th respectively in the final results.
Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Manager Andrew Johns said: “Hyundai Motorsport customers can look back on a very busy, and highly successful, last few weeks with superb performances in racing and rally competition. Our Elantra N TCR customers have made an excellent start to their first WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup season with the car at the Nürburgring as well as scoring TCR Europe podiums at Paul Ricard. Of course we cannot forget the 1-2 in class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours with the Elantra N TCR and i30 N TCR, and the 1-2 for Target Competition in TCR Italy with the i30 N TCR. On top of this we can also celebrate a WRC 2 win and a truly amazing overall WRC result for one of our Junior Drivers in Sardinia. Jari Huttunen has shown once again how capable he and the i20 R5 are even in the kind of tough gravel conditions typical of that event.”
