Hyundai i30 N TCR driver Borkovič completes title-winning TCR Eastern Europe season with Hungaroring wins
Hyundai i30 N TCR driver Dušan Borkovič signed off his championship winning TCR Eastern Europe campaign with two victories at the final weekend of the season at the Hungaroring.
- Dušan Borkovič won both races of the TCR Eastern Europe weekend at the Hungaroring to complete a perfect season of eight wins from eight starts
- The Serbian driver clinched the title with three races remaining on the calendar with his M1RA Motorsport i30 N TCR, but maintained his dominance through to the end of the season
- Five i30 N TCR customers stood on the podium during the season, including two drivers making their first starts with the car.
The performance completed a remarkable year, where the Serbian claimed pole position at all four tracks visited by the series and won every single race contested, driving an i30 N TCR prepared by the Hungarian M1RA Motorsport team.
With a wealth of TCR – and i30 N TCR – experience from previous years Borkovič, arguably, entered the season as the favourite to lift the title. His performance at the opening weekend at the Croatian Grobnik circuit removed all doubt that he would be the driver to beat in 2020. He took pole position, and then was dominant in both races to take a championship lead he would never surrender.
He was not headed on track until the opening corners of the Race 2 at Brno, where a slow start dropped him momentarily to second. Victory in the first contest at the Czech venue – which hosted the penultimate round – confirmed Borkovič as champion with three races left in the season, but his unbeatable performance continued through the remaining events to end the season with a perfect tally of 200 points.
Several other i30 N TCR customers enjoyed strong weekends during the season. Matĕj Konopka made his TCR debut at Grobnik, qualifying second and finishing third in both races. At the following weekend at Slovakia Ring Dušan Kouřil Jr. followed Borkovič home in Race 1 for a superb Hyundai 1-2, while Pole Szymon Jablonski repeated Konopka’s feat of two third places from the weekend at Brno.
At the final round Czech driver Tomáš Korený made his TCR debut, and was rewarded with third place in Race 1 of the weekend in Hungary. However, it was Borkovič who won both races to underline his dominance in the championship and give the M1RA Motorsport team a perfect conclusion to the season at their home event.
Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Operations Leader Andrew Johns said: “The i30 N TCR, M1RA Motorsport and Dušan Borkovič have been excellent all season in TCR Eastern Europe. Winning every race in any series is a massive achievement, and that they have done it with such dominance should be a huge badge of honour for all involved. It has also been very good to see the other Hyundai customers putting in strong performances. Including Borkovič five i30 N TCR drivers have taken podiums during the season – including two in their first weekends’ racing with the car. This proves that while Borkovič’s experience no doubt played a part in his championship win, the consistent performance of the car, and the support from Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing, also played a role in the results enjoyed by teams in the series.”
