Argentinian Honda star on top of the time sheets at Sandown

Argentinian Nestor Girolami has topped the time sheets in both of today's opening practice sessions at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne.

The Honda driver, who competes full-time in the WTCR Series – the top-level of global TCR competition – used new, green Michelin tyres to record the fastest times by a significant margin.

It is Girolami's first-ever visit to Australian shores.

Audi driver Liam McAdam was second fastest in the second session, also using new tyres to set a quick time in only his second-ever TCR Australia race event.

Impressive times were set by Will Brown (Hyundai) and John Martin (Honda), who are both completing double duties, driving in the all-new S5000 open wheel class.

The Sandown weekend continues tomorrow with qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday and Races 2 and 3 on Sunday.

All races are broadcast live, free and in HD on SBS, as well as the livestream.

“It’s a pleasure to be here, but free practice means nothing,” said Nestor Girolami.

“I’m happy because the car is very balanced. We are in a position to think for tomorrow. Unfortunately, tomorrow looks like raining, so you need to set up the car for raining, set up my brain for rain too!

“It’s a really nice circuit, especially Turn 6. I’m really excited to be here in Australia. I always wanted to come here, so I’m glad to have the opportunity.”

“Yeah, I’m really happy with that in only our second round in the category,” said Liam McAdam.

“We struggled in the first session, but the new tyres that we used really helped us.

“Having time on the new tyre means that we learnt a bit about the balance of the car, so it’s definitely going to steer us in the right direction, set-up wise.”
