i30 N TCR customers complete dominant TCR Asia season with title double

  • Luca Engstler secured the TCR Asia title in Bangsaen, Thailand taking podium finishes from both races of the series’ street circuit finale
  • Hyundai customers filled the first six places in the final drivers’ standings, with Diego Moran second ahead of Pepe Oriola, Daniel Miranda, Hua Yang Gao and Jinsoo Kim
  • The drivers’ title completed a double from the championship after i30 N TCR customers Liqui Moly Team Engstler wrapped up the teams’ crown with a weekend to spare.
Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Luca Engstler won the TCR Asia Series title. An excellent display on the street track of Bangsaen, Thailand completed a dominant season with the i30 N TCR.

The German mathematically clinched the title with second place in Race 1. Engstler had to recover from a lap one incident after starting from pole position for the fourth time in the series’ five weekends. He quickly made up the ground and had moved into second behind teammate and points’ rival Diego Moran before the race was halted after an accident blocked the track. The result left him 25 points – the same score as given for a race win – clear of Moran, but Engstler’s six race wins gave him an unassailable lead for any potential tie-breaker.

In Race 2 he confirmed the title with a ninth podium finish in ten races. Coming home third, he completed an all Hyundai podium behind Moran and Pepe Oriola. Incredibly i30 N TCR drivers swept the TCR Asia podium in eight of the ten 2019 championship races.

The results in Thailand, and the celebrations that followed, capped off an incredible championship season for i30 N TCR drivers in the series. Their performances clinched the Model of the Year title for the car in dominant fashion. The trophy was collected by FIA WTCR BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse driver Gabriele Tarquini, who was also on hand as a mentor for the Junior Drivers throughout the Thai weekend.

The stellar campaign ended with Hyundai Motorsport customers filling each of the top six positions in the championship standings during the i30 N TCR’s first season of racing in the series. Moran – who scored three victories with the car, including his finale weekend double – finished second in the championship ahead of Solite Indigo Racing driver Oriola.  Daniel Miranda, the Philippine another in the first group of Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior drivers, twice stood on the podium during his first season of TCR competition for Eurasia Motorsport, finishing fourth in the final standings. Chinese driver Hua Yang Gao, in the second Eurasia entry ended the year fifth with Jinsoo Kim sixth in his Solite Indigo i30 N TCR.

Winning the drivers’ championship also completed a very successful season for Engstler and the Liqui Moly Team Engstler team. Earlier this year they clinched the double of teams’ and drivers’ titles from the inaugural TCR Malaysia season. With the M1RA team Engstler is also one of the i30 N TCR drivers well placed in the TCR Europe standings, lying second with two weekends remaining.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Senior Sales Associate Andrew Johns said: “Being able to celebrate any title win with our customers is fantastic, but do so after such a dominant year in TCR Asia is very special. That i30 N TCR drivers have stood on all three steps of the series’ podium in all-but-two races of the season is an incredible achievement by everyone involved – the drivers, the teams our Customer Racing support engineers. A second title of the year for Luca Engstler, following the TCR Malaysia crown, is also the perfect way to show the value of the Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver initiative, with his superb results and Daniel Miranda’s fourth place in his debut season of TCR racing.”
