TCR Spa 500

WSC, the entity behind the TCR concept, and CREVENTIC, the promoter of the 24H Series, will join forces to organise the TCR SPA 500.
The first ever endurance race reserved for TCR cars only will take place on 4-6 October 2019 with the aim of reviving the tradition of Touring Car endurance races at the legendary circuit of Spa-Francorchamps.
The planned distance for the race is 500 laps of the 7 km circuit. The event is a joint operation between WSC that holds the rights to the TCR technical regulations and Dutch agency CREVENTIC that will be acting as the promoter and organiser, adding the race to its vast portfolio of endurance races all over the world.
“The growth of the category has been the success story in international motorsport for the past years,” WSC chairman Marcello Lotti commented. “The idea of an international endurance race, exclusively reserved for TCR cars, is the icing on the cake.”
Speaking on behalf of CREVENTIC, Gerrie Willems said: “We are proud that we can revive the long heritage of Touring Car endurance racing at Spa-Francorchamps.”
Extensive discussions with representatives of the brands that are involved in TCR competition made it clear that there was a need for a flagship, high-profile endurance race to showcase the category and make the connection with the production models the racing cars are stemmed from. Extending the already existing co-operation between WSC and CREVENTIC, an agreement was made to stage such a race. It didn’t take long to choose the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as the venue.
The event will be open to TCR cars only, with plenty of opportunities for the manufacturers to exploit it in terms of promotion. A categorisation with Pro, Semi-Pro and Amateur drivers will be in place, with the plan to have Pro, Pro-Am and perhaps Am-teams competing in separate classifications. The target is a minimum of 40 entries and the organisers and promoters will be working closely together with the manufacturers. To this end, a working group with manufacturers will be created to work on the best possible customer activation.
The plan is for a brand activation centre to be installed inside the paddock, where all manufacturers can display their cars and where visitors can watch the action on huge LED screens. Live TV and live streaming are planned, including live commentary on well-known Radios such as IMSA Radio and Radio Le Mans.
Pre-race activities will include parade laps for selected customers of the manufacturers involved in TCR with their road cars. An attractive package of support races will be put in place as well.
The three days of track action, from Friday 4 October until Sunday 6 October, will be preceded by a parade of race-cars from the circuit to the Malmedy city centre, where an autograph session with the drivers will take place.

24H TCE Series @ Dubai
Autorama Motorsport & Wolf-Power Racing win 24H Dubai


The Volkswagen Golf GTI claimed its second consecutive victory in the 24H Dubai, opening round of the 24H TCE Series. It was the car entered by Autorama Motorsport with Wolf-Power Racing that crossed the line first, having completed 545 laps and clinching a brilliant 26th position overall out of 74 starters.
Marlon Mendel, Fabian Danz, Yannick Mettler, Stefan Tanner and Jerôme Ogay shared driving duties and took the lead for the first time halfway through the race.
For the first twelve hours, the fight for the lead involved three Audi RS 3 LMS cars and the KCMG Honda Civic Type R, until they all ran into troubles. The AC Motorsport and LMS Racing Audi cars pitted with a fuel pump failure and a low oil pressure respectively, while the RS 3 LMS entered by Team Dynamics with WRC Development crashed because of a brake issue. The Honda took the lead, but soon afterwards lost time for restarting the engine after a pit stop. Both, the AC Motorsport Audi and the KCMG Honda were able to recover; the former moved up into the lead once again but then lost more time after a collision that resulted in a broken wheel-hub and eventually finished in fifth position; the latter was running in second place and closing the gap from the leaders when it suddenly caught fire. Andy Yan who was at the wheel escaped thanks to a quick intervention from the marshals.
The Autorama Motorsport Golf took the lead for good four hours before the end, with a comfortable margin ahead of two CUPRA cars. The Bas Koeten Racing driven by Ronny Jost, Julien Apothéloz, Loek Hartog and Oscar Graeper finished second, four laps behind the winners. The podium was completed by the Red of Ivo Breukers, Cody Hill, Henry Littig and Klaus Kresnik three further laps down. The best classified Audi car was the one entered by TFT/Cogemo/TLRT in fourth position.
The second round of the 24H TCE Series will be the 12H Mugello, on 28/30 March.

TCR Malaysia
The new series kicks off at Sepang

One of the latest additions to the ever-growing list of TCR series and championship all over the world, TCR Malaysia, will kick off this weekend at Sepang International Circuit.
Two more events will follow at the same venue, on January 25/26 and February 23/24.
Thirteen cars have been entered for the inaugural race meeting, representing four brands: CUPRA, Honda, Hyundai and Volkswagen.
Amongst the drivers there are two reigning champions: Luca Engstler, who clinched the titles in TCR Asia and TCR Middle East and finished runner up in TCR Germany, and Charlie Kang who won the inaugural season of TCR Korea. They both will be at the wheel of Hyundai i30 N cars for Team Engstler and Indigo Racing respectively.
Team Engstler will also run a second Hyundai for Théo Coicaud, plus three Volkswagen Golf GTI cars for Kai Jordan, Henry Kwong and Adam Khalid. Another Golf will be driven by TCR Europe’s regular Martin Ryba under the banner of Brutal Fish Racing, while Hong Kong-based TeamWork Motorsport has still to name a driver for its own Golf GTI.
Experienced local Douglas Khoo will sit in his Viper Niza Racing CUPRA, while four Honda Civic cars will complete the field: one FK2 shared by the Maximum Racing’s pair of Gary Cheung and David Lau and three FK7/8. Kenneth Lau and Michael Choi will race for Prince Racing and Paul Ip for KCMG.

The road going version of the VW Golf GTI TCR is on sale

The Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, the latest evolution of the Golf GTI, can now be ordered.
This 290hp sports car can reach speeds of up to 260km/h and is fitted with a 7-speed DSG gearbox, petrol particulate filter and highly exclusive equipment. Its price in Germany is Euro 38,950 (incl. VAT).
The new Golf GTI TCR was derived from the racing car – two times a winner of the TCR International Series. The road going model reaches 100km/h in just 5.6 seconds, while the maximum speed is 250km/h, but can optionally be increased to 260km/h.
The standard equipment includes a front-axle differential lock, perforated brake discs, driving profile selection, premium front sport seats with a new microfibre/fabric design, seat belts with red edging and an exclusive sports steering wheel.
The new Golf GTI TCR is also distinguished by the standard 18-inch Belvedere forged wheels (or Milton Keynes alloy wheels, as an alternative), black exterior mirror caps, sill extensions, front splitter, TCR roof spoiler and a diffuser at the rear. The new model makes a further strong impression even before the driver settles behind the wheel, as the TCR logo is projected onto the road when the front doors are opened.
The Golf GTI TCR can be further customised with options such as a new honeycomb decor foil for the side panels, carbon door mirror caps, a black painted roof, as well as various 19-inch alloy wheels.



IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge
The Hyundai Veloster N TCR was unveiled

The Bryan Herta Autosport unveiled its new Hyundai Veloster N TCR at the North American International Auto Show.
After its successful campaign in the 2018 Pirelli World Challenge that resulted in the Teams’ title and second and third positions in the Drivers’ championship, the team will field the new car in this year’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
Michael Lewis and Mark Wilkins, who were classified second and third in last year’s Pirelli World Challenge, will share driving duties in one car, while the second Veloster will be driven by Mason Filippi (who ranked fourth in the 2018 World Challenge) and Harry Gottsacker (runner up in last year’s World Challenge’s GTS class).
“The success we had last year with the i30 N TCR inspired us to expand Hyundai’s motorsports programme and bring the Veloster N TCR into a tougher series with longer races and more experienced drivers,” said team principal Bryan Herta.

TCR Malaysia
SIC and Team Engstler renew partnership

The Sepang International Circuit and Team Engstler continue their successful partnership for the SIC programme that aims to develop Malaysian motorsport talents.
In 2018 the team entered Mitchell Cheah in the TCR Asia Series and the young Malaysian finished runner up to his teammate Luca Engstler.
Razlan Razali, CEO of SIC: “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Engstler Motorsport, as they have proven their ability in developing our young drivers. The next step for Cheah and the team is assessing the nominated drivers who emerged in the 2018 Malaysian Championship Series and to guide them in their participation in TCR Malaysia.”
Three drivers will be selected and each one of them will take part in one TCR Malaysia event racing a Volkswagen Golf GTI car; the best of them, as decided by the team and Cheah, will be entered in the 2019 TCR Asia Series.
Adam Khalid, 20 years old, coming from the F4 South East Asia Championship was selected for the opening event.
“We are proud of our collaboration with SIC and we will actively support the young driver development programme for the next three years,” said Kurt Treml, Sport & Marketing Director.

Sonenscher appears on stage at Autosport show

David Sonenscher, the recently-announced Chief Operating Officer of TCR UK, attended the Autosport International Show at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.
In an interview on the stage, he said: “2018 was the first year and we learned a lot of lessons, but the most important thing was to establish the championship, which we did. Of course we would have liked more cars at some rounds, but we did the groundwork to put TCR on the map in the UK and in 2019 the idea is to grow the championship. What we now want to do is to provide a better show and we are putting all of our effort into that. It will be slow growth, but we are committed to grow the series and do it properly.”
Speaking about the decision to add a round at Spa, he added: “Spa is an iconic circuit and with TCR being the global platform that it is, we wanted to give people the chance to race alongside their European counterparts as part of a huge grid on an iconic circuit. For a start, it will provide drivers with the opportunity to see how they can progress from TCR UK up to TCR Europe, and it is also a way to drive home that anyone who is competing in TCR UK is part of a wider global family.”

IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge
KMW & TMR to field two Alfa Romeo cars

KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering will field two Alfa Romeo Giulietta cars in the TCR class of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
Both cars were at Daytona for the Roar Before the Rolex 24 test days, with Roy Block and Tim Lewis Jr. making laps. The driver lineup for the second car will be revealed in the coming days.
“The level of support from the Romeo Ferraris engineering company has been overwhelming and I feel like we’re the full factory team,” said team manager Louis Milone. “They sent people and they’ve been great with getting us all the parts we need to make this thing happen.”
With so many new beginnings – team, car, drivers – Milone has learned to adjust his expectations and goals for the upcoming season. “I would like to be competitive in every race and be a contender. But it would be a great season if we finish every race and somewhere in the championship that’s respectful. The ultimate goal is to represent the brand well and look professional.”
