|Hyundai Motorsport: From scratch to success in Alzenau

One week on from title success with its i30 N TCR in the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR)*, Hyundai Motorsport GmbH (HMSG) has reflected on the impressive journey it has undertaken so far.
When Hyundai Motorsport opened the doors to a brand new bespoke facility in the small German village of Alzenau in 2013, few could have imagined that the company would have become such a potent force in international motorsport from scratch within just five years.
Yet, in 2018, it established its title-chasing credentials in rallies and circuit racing right around the world. The foundations laid in those early years have proven pivotal in helping Hyundai Motorsport become a credible competitor against tough opposition. As the sole motorsport subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, HMSG has also played an instrumental role in changing perceptions of the global Hyundai brand.
Located on the outskirts of Frankfurt, near to Hyundai’s European headquarters and within reach of the famed Nürburgring, Hyundai Motorsport wasted no time getting up to speed. Initially focused on developing a new FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) outfit, the company needed to embark on an accelerated programme to develop its facilities from a blank sheet of paper.
Officially inaugurated on 13 June 2013, the 8,200m2building was installed with a fully functioning state-of-the-art workshop, design and assembly capabilities, as well as all the associated departments required for a world-class operation, together with a growing team of specialists.
In 2015, following its early milestones in WRC, the decision was made to expand the company’s remit into Customer Racing. Further showcasing the sporting aspect of Hyundai’s road cars and the high-performance engineering capabilities, the department’s first project was the i20 R5, which made its debut in September 2016.
Hyundai Motorsport expanded its Alzenau facilities to accommodate a new Customer Racing workshop, while concurrently increasing its technical capabilities with the addition of a new dyno. In 2017, following several years of rally focus, the company moved into circuit racing with the i30 N TCR.
Today, Hyundai Motorsport is a versatile and multi-faceted operation, representing Hyundai on the world’s rally stages and racing circuits. With a workforce of over 200 specialists from over 30 nations, it’s a truly international flavour, ideally suited to the rigours of competitive motorsport – and now with its first world titles secured and more undoubtedly to come in the future.

Initially focused on the WRC programme, over the years we have also gradually expanded into the Customer Racing arena, first with R5 and more latterly with TCR-specification machinery. We have been entrusted by Hyundai Motor to develop competitive cars to support customers around the world and we are honoured to have seen so much success with our cars this season. The i30 N TCR and the WTCR titles are really the culmination of all the development that has gone into our Alzenau facility since 2013 and these accolades can be shared between every member of our organisation.”
